LANGUAGE

• Speaks in complete sentences most of the time
• Understands and follows one or two-step directions
• Recognizes own name in print
• Recognizes 10 or more written letters
• Can identify the beginning sound of some words
• Can identify rhyming words
• Understands vocabulary related to position, direction, and size and
comparisons such as alike and different, top and bottom, first and last, up and down, big and little, etc.

WRITING

• Attempts to write own name
• Attempts to use pictures and/or writing to express ideas
• Copies simple figures such as lines and circles

PRE-READING

AWARENESS

• Listens to and participates in a story read aloud
• Demonstrates the ability to tell a story from picture
• Repeats major story elements from a story read aloud
• Demonstrates awareness of concepts of print: Cover and back of book, left to right, top to bottom

SOCIAL &

EMOTIONAL

• Knows first and last name
• Demonstrates independence in personal care such as hand washing, bathroom, and eating and drinking
• Demonstrates ability to get along with peers and adults without hitting, kicking, or biting
• Can begin to share with others
• Able to separate from parent or guardian for periods of time

FINE MOTOR

•Proper scissor handling and use
• Cuts simple shapes with control
• Holds writing tools with fingers
• Colors with control

Is your child eligible for Transitional Kindergarten (T.K.) or Early Admission Kindergarten (E.A.K.)?

Transitional Kindergarten:

Child turns five years-old between September 2nd and December 2nd.

Early Admission Kindergarten:

A child who turns five after December 2nd can start kindergarten on the day that they turn five years-old with the knowledge that they will complete a full year of kindergarten the following year.
